When Heather Rojo of Nutfield Genealogy posted about contributing to the Honor Roll Project earlier this month, I knew it would be the perfect way for our family to celebrate Memorial Day this year.
Heather started the project in 2010. Now every Memorial Day and Veterans Day she encourages people to photograph and transcribe war memorials in their area to contribute to The Honor Roll Project website.
Publishing the transcriptions of names from the honor rolls online make it possible for family and friends of veterans to find them and learn of their military service.
We went to Armory Park (formerly known as Military Plaza Park) in Tucson today and took photos of each war memorial there. Only the World War II Memorial had an honor roll with the names of those who died.
Want to participate? Check the Honor Roll Project Website first to see what has already been transcribed in your area. Then search google for war memorials and honor rolls in your city and county to see what’s out there. Take some photos, transcribe the names, and publish them online. If you don’t have a genealogy blog, send the photos and transcriptions to Heather Rojo at vrojomit@gmail.com and she will add them to the project.

Tucson, Arizona
With great reverence to all who served to maintain the freedoms of our nation, we dedicate this Memorial. The Tucson Arizona World War II Memorial honors service members from Tucson and Pima County who gave their lives during this global conflict.
The Memorial was inspired by the dedication of Gilbert B. Quintanilla, who served in the 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific, and Connie Lujan Harris, plus the many others who persevered to make this Memorial a reality. Special thanks to Ward 5 Council members Steve leal and Richard Fimbres, and to all who worked to make this Memorial a permanent place of remembrance.
The compass at the heart of the Memorial is a reminder that this war was fought from every direction across the globe.
