As an ambassador to RootsTech in Salt Lake City again this year, I have the pleasure of giving away one free pass to the conference. Before I share the details of the giveaway, I want to share some of the things Diana and I are doing at RootsTech.
Classes
I am teaching a class on Wednesday at 9:30am called Organize Your Research with Google Drive. I have enjoyed preparing for this lecture and learning about all the capabilities of Google Drive and Google Documents. I just turned in the syllabus last week, and let me tell you, there are so many reasons to use Google Drive to help you as you organize your research! One of my favorite tools is Google MyMaps – with lets you create and share custom maps. I have been using it extensively in the last month as I worked on a client project studying deeds and tax records in Rowan County, North Carolina. I’ll be sharing more about this in an upcoming blog post.
I am also teaching two Power Hour classes with Olivia Jewell and Jana Greenhalgh: Sharing Family History in Fun & Modern Ways (Thursday, 8am), and Families Discovering Family History Together (Saturday, 8am). My part in the Sharing Family History class is about interviewing in the 21st century – audio and podcast tools. My part in the discovering family history together class will be about activities you can do at home with your children. Diana is teaching about the FamilySearch catalog, accreditation, and research logs. To see what classes will be available, check out the RootsTech schedule.
Family Locket Booth

Family Discovery Day 2018
Diana and I will also have a booth in the expo hall on Saturday only. We are excited to participate in the Family Discovery Day fun! We will be participating in the Family Discovery Day Youth Passport which has activities for families to do at various booths all over the hall. Last year, some of the activities were “Strut your strands: DNA balloon crowns” from Legacy Tree Genealogists and Mexico’s Day of the dead face painting. Learn more about the Expo Hall here.
We are still working on our activity, but it will be something along the lines of this: “Brave Ancestor Scavenger Hunt: Discover Courageous Deeds for Prizes.” We thought it would be neat for attendees to share something courageous one of their ancestors have done and pin it up on a family tree or something. Talking about brave ancestors has been one of my favorite ways to share family history with my children! Check out my post about it: Brave Ancestors, Brave Daughters: Make a Brave Women Book.
For prizes, we have been brainstorming different things, but we will probably be giving away heart shaped lockets, historical children’s toys, candy, or some combination of the above! At our booth, we will also be sharing about our book and eCourse, Research Like a Pro. In fact, we are having a black Friday sale at the end of this week for the eCourse, so look for information about that in your email inbox. The Kindle eBook version of the book will be half off during the Black Friday sale.
We look forward to having a booth in the expo hall for the first time! It’s a fun and busy place.
Keynote Speakers
RootsTech 2019 looks to be an exciting conference. Already, the planners have announced that Saroo Brierley will be one of the keynote speakers. He lost contact with his family at a train station in India, was later adopted by an Australian family, then as an adult, tracked down his birth mother. He wrote international bestselling book, A Long Way Home. Read more about him here. Are you excited about the conference yet? So many classes, speakers, activities, and experiences. There will even be a film contest this year! Check it out: RootsTech Film Fest.
