Family History Coloring Books with ReallyColor
ReallyColor is a website that allows you to create coloring books from photos. The website isn’t free, but it’s very simple! Anyone can use it. After you create a coloring page with their website, you can decide if you like it enough to purchase it. You can buy photo credits for about $0.40 each if you buy 10 or more at a time (if you just buy one, it’s about $1.50). I’ve made coloring pages with other tools (like BeFunky, Picasa, and pixlr.com), but ReallyColor is unique because of the simple editing tools and the ability to create a coloring book.

One of the features I like is the photo quality rater. I uploaded a photo of my great-great grandmother Allie and her son Bert. The photo quality is 8 out of 100. The program suggests choosing a higher quality photo. First, I wanted to see if I could clean it up using the editing tools.
I used the “erase tool” to remove the background to help make the people stand out:
However, the faces still didn’t look right, so I decided to try another photo with higher resolution. Here’s a photo of my mother when she was a girl. It’s a bit higher quality. The tool on the left allows you to add more detail or take away detail. I added as much detail as possible, then used the erase tool to remove the dots in the background.
My 3-year-old liked coloring the resulting printout! She asked for my help coloring the ribbons on the dress and she was adamant that the teeth be colored purple. haha!
When I made a coloring page out of this photo of my grandmother feeding a sheep, I was disappointed that the outline of her shoulders and the outline of the sheep didn’t show up very well. There was not enough contrast between her shirt and the bright sky behind her.
To correct it, I used the draw tool to add in the lines that were missing.
After I making several coloring pages, I saved them all as PDFs in a folder on my desktop. When you use ReallyColor’s website to create a coloring book, you simply upload PDF files. Twelve pages is the minimum, but you can make longer books. Afterward you can manipulate the order of the coloring pages. I wish I had edited the coloring pages with a title or name of the person. The website doesn’t let you do that so you would have to add their a caption before you upload them.
One great thing about purchasing the coloring books, besides the fact that they are relatively cheap (this 12-page book was $11.99), is that additional copies are half off. So if you want to order several copies for all of your children or grandchildren, you get a better deal.
